Learn how to introduce yourself in Darija — Moroccan Arabic for beginners

If you're learning Darija, one of the first things you should master is how to introduce yourself. Whether you're meeting new friends, talking to locals, or taking a class — these basic phrases will help you connect.

Let’s keep it simple and practical for beginners 👇


👋 Step 1: Say Hello

Start with a friendly greeting:

English Darija  
Hello salam  
Peace be upon you Salam 3alaykom  
Hi (informal) labas?

🧑 Step 2: Say Your Name

English Darija  
My name is… smiti…  
I am… ana…  

Examples:

  • smiti Abdul – My name is Abdul

  • ana Fatima – I am Fatima

💡 You can use smiti or ana, both are common in everyday conversation.


🌍 Step 3: Say Where You're From

English Darija  
I’m from Morocco ana mn lmaghrib  
I’m from the US ana mn mirikan  
I’m from Spain ana mn sbanya  

To ask someone where they're from:

  • mnin nta? (to a man)
  • mnin nti? (to a woman)
    Meaning: Where are you from?

👂 Step 4: Ask the Other Person

Here’s how to keep the convo going:

English Darija  
And you? (to a man) o nta?  
And you? (to a woman) o nti?  
What’s your name? shno smitak?  

Example Dialogue:

salam, smiti Adam. onta?
smiti Karim. Matsharfin!

Translation:

— Hi, my name is Adam. And you?
— My name is Karim. Nice to meet you!
