Learning Darija Online for Kids: What Works at Each Age

An online Darija lesson is not the same thing for a 3-year-old and for a 10-year-old. Here is what I see working with families.

Ages 2 to 4: songs, with a parent on the sofa

At this age, the screen should never be the teacher. Use short songs and videos of 3 to 5 minutes, watch them together, and sing the words again later in the bath or in the car. The real lesson happens when you repeat bslama (بسلامة, “bye”) every time someone leaves the house.

Ages 5 to 7: short visual lessons and repetition

Children now enjoy short lessons with pictures, colors and animals. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough. Ask them to repeat out loud, pause the video, and let them point at the screen. Coloring books and picture cards help the words stay.

Ages 8 to 12: a structured online course

This is the best age for a real online course. Kids can follow lessons step by step, answer simple questions and start small dialogues. Twenty to thirty minutes works well, followed by a few minutes of speaking with you. This is exactly the age group my Darija course for kids was built for.

Here is a simple plan that mixes the screen with real life:

1. Monday: one short online lesson, then use 2 new words at dinner.
2. Tuesday: a Darija song, sung again in the car or the bath.

4. Thursday: no screen, a game or a coloring book with the same words.
